It’s Ok…To Take Care of YOU, First!

Have you ever boarded a plane and heard this safety announcement?

“Should the cabin experience a sudden loss in pressure. Oxygen masks will drop down from above your seat. Please make sure you put YOUR OWN mask on FIRST before helping others!”

There is a specific reason why these directions are in this order. You must take care of YOU first before you can help others!

Are you caring for a loved one? If so, don’t risk your own health for the sake of your loved one. They need you now, more than ever. Therefore, you must take care of YOU emotionally and physically so you can be healthy for them.

In most cases, people develop certain beliefs which form personal barriers that stand in the way of caring for themselves.

However, as a family caregiver you must ask yourself: “What good will I be to the person I care for if I become ill? If I get hurt? If I have stroke? If something happens to me?”

It can be hard to break your old beliefs and remove some of those personal barriers to self-care. This is why it is so important to identify what is in your way.

  • Do you feel selfish if you put your needs first?
  • Do you feel guilty to think of your needs as more important? If so, why?
  • Do you have trouble asking for help?
  • Do you feel like you can do it all?

Sometimes caregivers have misconceptions that increase their stress, ultimately leading to burnout. These beliefs often get in the way of good self-care. Here are some:

  • I’m responsible for my parent(s) or spouses’ health.
  • If I don’t do it, who will?
  • If I do it, I will get the love and respect I deserve but never got from my mom.
  • Our family has always taken care of each other.
  • I promised my mother I would always take care of my father.

If you feel burned out and wonder how you’re ever going to keep these promises you made to yourself? Then it’s essential for you to reach out for help. You are not alone, but you have to make time for self-care!

This is why it’s important to utilize services such as in-home care or adult day care so you can take the break you deserve to rest, run errands or visit with friends.

What if there was a solution that not only helped you get the break you desperately needed but your loved one had a great time too!

What could this solution be? Have you ever heard of Adult Day Care? I know, I know, you don’t like the name! I agree, it is a terrible name, which is why we simply call it the “Club!”

Essentially, it’s a day club for seniors who may suffer from different forms of dementia or who may need a little help during the day. It’s the perfect daycation for you and your loved one!

Take a break and enjoy peace of mind knowing your loved one is having the time of their life!
