Who Pays for Adult Day Care?
Insurance, VA, Medicaid, and Out-of-Pocket Explained
When you’re caring for an aging parent or spouse, one of the first questions that comes to mind is: Who pays for adult day care?
The answer isnât always simpleâbut understanding your options can make a big difference in how you plan and budget for care. Whether you’re exploring insurance coverage, VA benefits, Medicaid programs, or out-of-pocket costs, this guide breaks it all down for you.
Does Insurance Cover Adult Day Care?
Many family caregivers assume their loved oneâs health insurance will cover adult day care, but the reality depends on the type of insurance.
- Medicare does not typically cover adult day care services. While it may cover certain medical services like physical therapy, surgery or doctorâs appointments, it does not typically pay for long-term care âlike adult day care, assisted living or in-home care.
- Private health insurance also generally does not cover adult day care. However, if your loved one has long-term care insurance, thereâs a good chance it will help.
Long-Term Care Insurance
This type of policy is specifically designed to cover services like adult day care, home care, assisted living, and nursing care. If your loved one has a long-term care policy, it may reimburse some or all of the cost of adult day servicesâbut youâll need to check their benefit terms.
Tip: Look for a section in the policy about âadult day health servicesâ or âcommunity-based care.â Many require that the individual needs assistance with at least two activities of daily living (ADLs)âsuch as bathing, dressing, or eating.
Does Medicaid Cover Adult Day Care?
In many cases, yesâMedicaid can help pay for adult day care, depending on your stateâs programs and your loved oneâs eligibility.
In Florida, for example, adult day services may be covered under Medicaid waiver programs such as the Long-Term Care Managed Care Program (LTCMC). These waivers allow eligible individuals to receive care in a community setting, like an adult day center, rather than a nursing home.
To qualify, your loved one must meet financial and medical eligibility criteria, and there may be a waiting list through the Aging and Disability Resource Center (ADRC).
Important: Medicaid benefits vary by state, so be sure to connect with a local case manager or elder law attorney to fully understand whatâs available in your area.
VA Benefits for Adult Day Care
If your loved one is a veteran, they may be eligible for adult day health care services through the VA.
The Department of Veterans Affairs offers adult day care as part of its Geriatrics and Extended Care Services for qualifying veterans. This program includes supervision, personal care, therapy, and social activities.
Eligibility depends on:
- Whether the veteran is enrolled in VA health care
- Their service-connected disability status
- A clinical assessment by a VA physician
In some cases, the Aid and Attendance pension benefit may also be used to help offset the cost of adult day services for veterans and their spouses.
What About Out-of-Pocket?
Many families pay for adult day care out-of-pocket, especially if their loved one doesnât have long-term care insurance or qualify for VA/Medicaid benefits.
The good news? Adult day care is the most affordable senior care options availableâoften half the cost of in-home care and far less than assisted living or nursing homes.
At ActivAge, we offer flexible hourly pricing as opposed to daily pricing which gives families more flexibility to choose a schedule and budget that works for them.
